Piega unveils new Premium Series loudspeakers

Latest trio of Swiss-designed loudspeakers – consisting of two floorstanders and a standmount – debuts at Bristol's Sound & Vision Show

Swiss manufacturer Piega chose The Bristol Show (look out for a full report next month) to unveil its latest range of loudspeakers – the Premium Series. The three new speakers consist of a brace of floorstanders and a new standmount, and all come with a C-shaped chassis conceived by the renowned Swiss architect and designer Stephan Hürlemann. Manufactured from aluminium, the cabinet is claimed to be 30 percent more rigid while those distinctive curves have been adopted so that no standing waves can occur within the chassis, resulting – so Piega tells us – in a clear and precise delivery of all medium and low-range frequencies. Meanwhile, bass plates and spikes have been introduced to the floorstanding designs to ensure interference-free sound reproduction.

Kicking off the range, the £1,999 Premium 301 standmount has a baffle with the same dimensions as an A4 sheet of paper and a 140mm mid/bass driver partnered with Piega's LDR 2642 MKII ribbon tweeter. Sensitivity is claimed to be 89dB with 4ohm loads, while its frequency range is 39Hz to 50kHz.

The smaller of the floorstanding models, the super-slim £3,499 Premium 501 is designed for small to medium-sized rooms, is a metre high and only 160mm wide. The two-and-a-half way speaker shares the same LDR 2642 MKII ribbon tweeter as its standmount sibling and additionally has two 120mm mid/bass drivers. Sensitivity is improved to 90dB (at 4ohm) and frequency range is quoted at 36Hz to 50kHz.

While not a lot bigger than the 501 (50mm taller and 20mm wider), the £4,999 range-leading Premium 701 (pictured above) has a new LDR 3056 ribbon tweeter, which evolved following insights gained during Piega's development of its Line Source Driver and second-generation Coax System. It has a thin membrane and newly developed suspension and is claimed to offer a high degree of efficiency with improved bandwidth, linearity and resolution. This is partnered by a pair of 140mm mid/bass drivers, resulting in quoted sensitivity of 91dB (at 4ohm) and a frequency range of 34Hz to 50kHz.

All models come in a silver aluminium finish with removable fabric covers or are available in black or white finishes at extra cost. Click here to find out more about the Premium Series.
